I finally watched the Truman show - as recommended by zoe and a lot of others. it was amazing, of course. the little inconsistencies that build up his suspicion, in the end, he was acting to fool everyone else. the set - it’s back to the fake/artificial again... what christof said was quite profound, really, about this world being better than the outside world. I must get exact quotes on this. and there were a lot of nice shots there too. I enjoyed the almost square ratio, I guess to match a television screen. I felt more caged with the black fade around the edges sometimes too. ‘You never had a camera in my head’, I think zoe was quoting when she mentioned it to me. that in itself is really interesting.. (this reminds me, I need to watch synecdoche, New York as per her recommendation) the surveillance of the mind.. and when he said that thing about, we take the world as it is constructed.. definitely the kind of film that wakes you up a little. reminds me of what we were talking about in the lecture.. how big things like monuments and buildings fade into the background when you pass them everyday.. the whole film really was perfect in delivering what we know about the situation, making us question what is real and what is not as well. of course, the last scene on the water and the sky-wall is amazing. walking up those stairs, for a moment I really thought he was going to stay behind - that would have been a good ending too. But alas, he said his signature line, wow, and stepped out.
I will take screen stills when I feel the need to...
