I'm familiar with the short story 'I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream' through gameplay I watched maybe a few years ago (it was adapted into a video game) and it has never been not chilling to think about. The way it was written in the short story, reflected quite accurately in the game and it is horrifying because of how close it could come to a real future...
I came across this video on youtube (I love video essays because you always find new inspiring works to look at, and it's easier for me to absorb information sometimes in video format, and it's always good to hear others' analysis and thoughts) which was titled 'the bleakest depiction in sci-fi. it was a really good video and he was referencing films in sci fi that I haven't yet watched but definitely am going to.
I still remember the feeling when going through the game (through someone else's gameplay) and there's just something really unsettling about the style and progression of it all. it's definitely inspiring - makes me want to do something similar in the future.. the pixellated style of old school point and click adventure gameplay is quite interesting as well.
'Limp, the body of Gorrister hung from the pink palette; unsupported—hanging high above us in the computer chamber; and it did not shiver in the chill, oily breeze that blew eternally through the main cavern. The body hung head down, attached to the underside of the palette by the sole of its right foot. It had been drained of blood through a precise incision made from ear to ear under the lantern jaw. There was no blood on the reflective surface of the metal floor.'
the descriptions give me really strange visuals - both clear and vague at the same time. one of those things that feel like it would especially look really different in different peoples' minds.. I'm definitely wanting to write..
