I wanted to try out my mini projector again (I haven't used it nearly enough) specifically to see how it would work for tracing (I realised I had some water soluble oil paints and watercolur and old panels I can paint the back of this whole time..) -it would work really well I discovered - for a certain size of surface. I also didn't mind if it was a bit pixellated sometimes as, I don't really need that precise detail, maybe I can trust my senses sometimes.
this post is kind of on the same thought trail as the next one (about printing) where I think about my proposal at this stage (still very blurry, trying not to panic). from this test, I realised that projecting onto a mirror reflects it in a really dynamic way. I also love how images sink and slink so easily into crevices or caving-ins of the wall, as easily as you can digitally manipulate it on the wall, easier in fact. the image itself creates meaning when played with these surfaces... imagine a rough surface, or something like an animal of stuffed toy on front of the projection creating ambiguous shadows.
projection is definitely something I'm interested in incorporating into a show, but maybe not in the proposal as I feel I need to really understand the space or play around in the actual space to know the dynamics... I'm not sure at this stage yet. below are some photos from today's experimenting...
I really loved how the amusement park map (of a park that has already closed down) looks, as well as some film stills or screen shots from videos of news or amateur tourist videos. also, some collages look better than others when projected. perhaps a brightly coloured or black and white looks best, instead of paler/without those stark contrasts that stand out from the projected image.
