watching the shining

I finally watched the shining with olive today. I know it’s an iconic film with many great scenes to paint from, as olive had done in her painting Overlook. And it wasn’t just the visuals that made it strange - but the acting also, it was unnatural but perfect for the film. It seems so rehearsed/wooden in some way, especially the wife. The suspense was built up in the perfect way, it reminded me greatly of what bong joon ho referenced in the q&a, that ‘tension that is always invisible but never exaggerated’ with Hitchcock’s films. He also referenced him in saying that a murder that happens in broad daylight has much more cinematic excitement than one that happens in broad daylight. It was definitely terrifying, this film, because it could very much be real. It was terrifying also because I read it years before and it was the first EVER book that actually spooked me. Stephen king really gets into your head. I felt like I was going mad with the protagonist. (Another book that I was spooked by was the green mile, something about his books just stay with you, maybe not all the details but the impact of it.. and that impact is of a dark shadow) Anyway, everything about this film was perfect, even the fading in and out of shots which I’ve personally never seen in films (I need to watch more films..) Also, I’ve been thinking I should watch more films from back in the day.. it is really nice to use imagery from more contemporary films like I have done, obviously, but there is a wondrous wealth of visual excitement waiting for me to uncover... in documentaries.. in old animations.. in classics.. I can’t wait.. it’s going to be a life-long process for sure. sometimes it is exhausting watching a film (usually it is) because with good cinema I get very attached to it and can’t relax to just absorb it, I need time to really appreciate it, but I also know I would absolutely have to go back and collect film stills. anyway, the shining’s execution and set design was impeccable in driving the film’s strange atmosphere forward. Definitely one of the world’s cinematic masterpieces.
