when I was reading about heterotopias I think somewhere it mentioned ‘gardens of antiquity’ which reminded me of the imagery of those grand gardens with elaborate designs you only see next to mansions... and that image reminded me of all these other things I've seen them in..
-the shining, description of the moving hedges in book,
-the lovely bones
-harry potter goblet of fire
-Alice the disney movie,
-even in Mario
-the cat returns (maze)
-barbie as repunzel pc game from childhood (so much nostalgia down to the sound effects)
-edward scissorhands
-the labyrinth (pan's the movie, but also in Percy Jackson the labrynth one, which is referencing pan, kind of echoing the diminishing nature)
[Panic in Pan: Disturbed in his secluded afternoon naps, Pan's angry shout inspired panic (panikon deima) in lonely places.[25][26] Following the Titans' assault on Olympus, Pan claimed credit for the victory of the gods because he had frightened the attackers. In the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE), it is said that Pan favored the Athenians and so inspired panic in the hearts of their enemies, the Persians]
anyway, the idea of shaping these hedges into animals or into a maze is a really strange concept when you think about it (I mean all types of landscaping is strange but this is peculiar).. plants + animals..
