I had the idea of drawing whilst thinking of nature when I saw Samuel Palmer's drawing at the British Museum - it was one of the original works that Sarah brought out for us. I loved that little drawing, looked like both a thought process and an observation, and I really like how they divided up the page filling in every bit kind of like a journal, with writing as well. I just really liked the way it was drawn.
then I was thinking of, if I just draw whilst thinking of nature, what would that be like, (considering our perception of nature, even though we encounter a form of it pretty often in everyday life) so essentially, kind of like a memory of nature... I also wanted to get used to procreate again and explore it a bit more. I used different brushes, and I loved some textures some could give - I was picking out details the same way I do in paint, which was amazing, felt like I was painting. anyway, halfway through my 'tree' - which looked more like the futuristic plastic trees in *the lorax - I started looking at this particular tree I remember vividly in lisbon outside the Paula rego museum - those trees were so strange, like they were drawn - I remember arriving there and immediately being pulled by them, and I think every one was too. perhaps the strange coloured building of the museum added to it as well. they seem more like, *paul nash trees or, *Dr. Seuss trees, rather than real trees you see usually, like they were pulled towards the sky, i dont know how to explain it. they feel foreign, alien.
(I could get into the lorax in a whole other post because it's all about the diminishing of trees - replacing them with plastic ones until our protagonist plants a real tree at the end.. it's a wonderful film that addresses it beautifully.. maybe I'll look at the original *lorax book)
paul nash trees..
