landscape and infrastructure..

-images solar plants,, went to see.. on one of those trips Joshua tree desert.. understand nature and extent of human interaction.. you need the man made landscape to understand who we are and what we’re doing.. landscape mountain valleys,, hazardous waste.. prisons.. places you stop at look like nothing on side of highway. makes landscape seem beautiful.. convoluted,, intimidating.. really makes you think about different and hidden infrastructures.. around us but not landmark..

-the way she’s been looking at landscape.. specific way of encountering through space.. wind farm,, one of largest American wind farms,, energy construction sites..

-process based works, really try understand how to make the work that she does.. having a tactile understanding of materials really helps what she’s doing, and what they mean.. eight years ago,, the internet, how someone who makes objects, what are their landmarks, how is virtual space spaced..

-didn’t know how internet infrastructure.. London internet exchange. went to..

Fascinatingly underwhelming,, networked into scene.. cables connecting the world ,, physically standing in a landscape and a spot in GPS .. merging these two spaces.. the remote landscapes.. thinking about the actual pixel intangible analogue digital.. think of our ideas of landscape.. human idea of landscape,, romanticise the landscape.. sesera not land as natural but second nature.. transformed by human hand.. nth nature.. inherently / layering old and new, technology landscape..

-work. these interests led to look at renewable sources of energy. Both past and future tech at the same time. bio fuel, so much excitement about future sustainable energy. potential of these plants.. algae probably only know like ten of them.. so many variables when dealing with algae.. crops wheat soya.. silk sitting in algae.. green.. a lot of work is collaborated.. when interested in algae.. talking about what she was doing and her work,, she sent her a lot of research.. uses algae as a way to clean,, wastewater in factories where they use toxic dyes.. remove heavy metals in water.. thought was really fascinating.. not expecting outcome but experimenting.. if algae can decolorise dyes.. process was really fun.. and didn’t really matter the outcome.. the act of research became the work itself.. that process of experimentation became whatvwas so interesting.. as well as using algae in other ways, also added in firstsite.. watching algae growing on fabric.. different types of fabric.. different variables considered.. light quantity temperature bacteria.. Brenda sent over to her studio used bottles.. 180 litres of algae.. sat for about eight weeks.. it began to smell.. bacteria.. dark and dense.. that was used to dye fabrics in the show. sat in subtle way. chlorophyll faded in show.. sense of duration.. showed research how algae revives by water .. potential .. locked time capsule.. even if it disappears the trace is still there

Analogue and digital

-covers staircase walk around it, narrow space in front of work never see the whole thing. shifting presence.. research use a lot of historical and recent of Bristol,, in this context there was read about studied at Bristol university Nobel prize, invented, huge contribution quantum, the current status of Bristol,, Hp labs,, thinking about mixture of those two;. Had this idea wanted to develop to work with computer programmer, produce unlimited unique digital patterns.. completely varied.. the software not very user friendly.. created really amazing archive.. when you click generates different pattern.. never same pattern.. how this information is collected.. most often these process.. randomness.. comprehend and visualise this data.. these patterns feed back into the work they made.. they never shown in digital format.. wanted layering to take place.. rug work .. ceiling hung curtain.. interested in thinking about passage of time.. potential future and history.. how I make work is really layered.. production.. shifting process.. way of abstracting it.. loss of information.. mistakes that happen from human error (likes that , really important part,) smaller weaving as well, some made by her and some not.. dictated by time she has.. floor places made by others.. process is interesting.. don’t really care if made it or not.. simple framing.. learnt weaving process by visiting___ and learning. understanding cultural significance of this skill, heritage.. she was generous.. Native American past.. various tales.. they pass down stories.. connecting everything you do with the landscape.. came about from these trips.. honestly wasn’t aware of the culture but was drawn to idea of their oral tradition not text based memory of past.. when it’s oral.. creates this unique perspective of space around you.. need landmarks, way of seeing things.. also creates need of narrative for memory of site.. generation to generation.. when traditions.. another weaving process.. digital patterns feed through software, then physical / labour intensive process.. don’t have textiles background ,, came across and in some of things she makes.. full of errors.. like mistakes.. very human moments.. where your mind drifts off.. lost a pick.. part of work.. moving image work with audio piece.. sound is other element of work, break up formality.. bleed into gallery space.. in past made own sound. For this work she collaborated with local sound group.. familiar with site.. worked with the architecture.. created sound for this piece.. it’s so technical, analysed bands of colours to calculate wavelength and converted into wavelengths.. colour into sound.. residence through architecture recorded and played background and ambient feeling..

-collected all sorts of objects.. how patterns resonated.. ceramic pieces.. shapes found in the patterns taken out and made three dimensional.. subtle references throughout.. thinking process.. how things come together.. assortment of original and relics pots.. a lot of work happens for about a year prior.. -sound piece .. unpredictable.. aesthetically engaging.. rejects those that aren’t.. is that something that happens.. some images are pretty ugly just don’t work.. strategic.. technically really hard to weave.. the uglier ones wanted to work with. Inherent aesthetic in weaving. minimal aesthetic in the past.. distance herself on over time. More than. Visual thing. So much more to it..
