lilah fowler 1-1 tutorial

I just had my tutorial with lilah fowler and it was very valuable. I am in a sort of transition point in my work where I want to expand much more with installation/video/photography work, especially in the nature/culture idea.

Below are the things I planned to ask:

-only really been doing painting so far and have always been interested in the digital.

-from my dissertation bleed into my studio work of the nature/culture idea,
In the digital sense been thinking about the nature we absorb through the screen - digital media as perception

-had the urge to make digital / installation work but not sure where/how to start, never thought about ideas in a three dimensional or even interactive mindset also practical eg materials

-powell-cotton photographs, digital collage (before painting and recently end result) nature through screens screenshots/artificial landscape / projection mapping, play with text /global issues, tourism

-the installation at first site - computer programming into textiles? Something abstract into something tangible and I think I want to do that and so far I’ve been doing that with memories I guess.

-draping, of fabrics… domestic? Digital print type …

- The aluminium projection? Playful way ? Have a certain message communicate through these multiple elements..

-digital collaging from found media??

We talked through ideas of the digital (I asked her if making data tangible made her think about data differently she said that’s a really interesting question, she doesn’t think it did, it started off in curiosity..)

-I asked about the process of changing something from one state to another (translation) and she talked about her work about making pixels into sounds by colour, which she learnt how to do from a sound artist… just need to experiment and learn.

-for my digital print.. she said I needed to think a lot about.. posters?banners? Stretched? Decisions are important, to her it seems very personal and with the animals its kind of not taking yourself seriously/individual moment/ what happens if I distill that, displaces the viewer from me? The way she reads it, I’m trying to not take it seriously, self negation. edit text more? This is done timidly, excusing myself, saying something that is personal to me but not allowing it to have its weight, hide behind? I’m bearing something open and personal, but then I am doing a classic thing where you make fun of yourself get around the discomfort of being open bc I created these smiley fasces. What does that do for the work… is that an aspect of the work that is important? Do I want to create a character that embodies what is said or do I want it to be more removed..when its printed in this way, in these distorted shapes, why, scale, where would you hang it, eg clamps.. so many undecided factors to it that will shape the work.what helps make those decisions is being clear on what you want it to do. Think through the ideas allowing you to arrive naturally - its about the work. It becomes that naturally.

-her projection on the aluminium polycarbonate, moments collected and edited together over a couple of years, presented slanted, on that material, those decisions come together after a long time…don’t jump ahead…work takes time to evolve. It will become a refined thing that may exist with other work you’re doing. Sense of - need to develop further..

-my pieces now all seem like different pieces.. she’s curious about what I’m going to do in the next months

-showed her photographs of Powell-cotton.. she suggested for me to make a video work.. these images are so interesting, wonder what printing them out would do.. but making a film capturing the strangeness. Explore sounds.. nature sounds.. (real sounds?) she thinks it could be really interesting video, depends on how I experiment (film nature outside? Myself? Zoom?) I should also think about the root of the diorama - educational. (Digital taking over?)
