We had our december group crit (before start of holidays) with Alicia. Overall it went quite well, we were a bit rushed though since we were a large group (but then some didn’t show up) but it was still very useful.
Alicia said she preferred the canvas/quick one I did more than the panel (she said it felt like some things were still unresolved) (now I feel I need to work on that a lot more, but I don’t know how). She also said she’s very interested in text and can never really do it herself, and that the text is also kind of like a diagram/mind map. Agata said the ‘landscape’ perfectly illustrates what I wrote on the canvas, which is good. She also liked my title for the panel, (No Place) Like Home. They were also suggesting for some other works to accompany this one, like projection mapping onto boxes... Alicia said perhaps this painting would be better with other paintings alongside, like another with the boxes, or the figure, but I don’t think I agree with that. I do think there’s a lot more material from the film that I collected that has a lot of potential for painting though. For the loose canvas, they suggested for me to do more, maybe presenting in a loose way, like hanging mid air or layering. Alicia said my works are quite concept(ual) driven.
more about the diagram/mindmap thing .. I think that's a super interesting idea, making me think of something basquiat-like, like in Sarah's lecture she was pointing out how he was referencing art history in his paintings, in a clear diagram like way... ***
I was also listening to this song just now and it just so happens that the lyrics in the chorus (Waiting by Battle Bloom) mentioned the diagram thing too...
'Irrational and beautiful but what is
real
Maps and diagrams tell us how to feel
If living is breathing and seeing and breaking free from insanity
Time is not for wasting, no more no more waiting'
As for the others in the crit, I liked everyone’s work for different reasons... everyone’s work was strong and inspiring to see. It was good to note down the references given, especially the books to read.
