when I saw that dictionary.com’s word of the year is ‘existential’ I found it quite funny... existential is a word that has been thrown around a lot lately by young people in a normalised casual sense.. I might be wrong but I’ve definitely been seeing that word a lot lately. In my attempt to write my artist statement too, I’ve used the word existential because I realised, that really is what my paintings are.. just reflecting upon the peculiarities of living.. and dying... we don’t even know for certain if there’s an afterlife... if it is painful.. if you forget your time here.. basically we don’t know anything.. we are pawns of something higher, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of it, even if it will amount to nothing in the end..
the explanations as to why existential is the word for 2019 makes a lot of sense, and sort of explains my work a bit as well.. it was looking at all the tragedies like gun violence and political unrest globally as existential.. as a planet in peril.. as it always has been, but it seems to get worse and worse each year.. even if we know the pattern it is unstoppable.
