(PPD) 4th day with alicia paz

The fourth day in Alicia’s home studio we also continued to cut new acetate shapes as well as the tape process.

Alicia was talking about how she regularly listens to BBC radio, like 94.9, and it made her feel more settled in London. we listened to this station the entire time and it was certainly interesting. Apart from funky friday where people call in and request disco songs, there was also a conversation in the afternoon about perceiving world news as a consumer. Some people feel it’s all too depressing, but it’s important to remember that the extremes are being broadcasted and biased. Alicia said it’s good to have a balance, look at the good news too.

We were talking about fashion and Alicia mentioned how Chantel Joffe did some paintings looking at the backstage of fashion week..

I saw that the gargoyles I was cutting out, some had their tongues stuck out which is not unlike the ‘cheeky cat toy’ I have in my painting now. Perhaps I could research or collect more imagery like this. I’m quite drawn to it as it’s comical, but also disturbing. I also recall that if you bit your tongue in your sleep and it bleeds out you can die. definitely something to think about..

Afterwards Trinh and I also went to see Alicia’s current show in Paddington, ‘The Future is Female’, with three other artists. Seeing her work in person was great, seeing the textures and how figures are painted as tiles. From the images you don’t get to see the full scope of the work. The heavy medium she was telling us about, it was very clear to see how it improved the painting. I also noticed she had cultural references to literature on the tiles. It was definitely a very unique perspective as a painting. I will look more into her works. I mentioned the talk that Alicia gave at the gallery and the lady said it went really well, there’s actually a video on YouTube that we can watch on it, so I will definitely do that, as Alicia goes in depth into her work.
