chisenhale studios visit

We got the chance to visit the chisenhale studios (mainly mark fairnington/matt calderwood) as well as talk with the curator of the show at chisenhale gallery. Through mark, there were a lot of good points made in conversation with matt as well. Both of their works were amazing in person. It felt like I was attending a very useful lecture. I did record some parts to look back on later. The curator at the gallery had a lot of interesting points as well, in relation to the subtleties of the show (constituents, agency, who's in charge, etc..)

  • how a structure operates. key aspects : foundation of show, active noise cancellation. technique.. wanted introduce that in the space but kind of impossible, how can I introduce something in a closed situation and how you open it up. if you put them together makes an office space. exposed the prexisting walls
  • energy, circulation, use, all cables exposed. what charged a structure. pose questions but not answer them.
  • one of the panel is self powered, independent. runs out of power in two hours, but takes 18 hours to charge
  • draw attention to, working structures, based on regulations, optimum working office spaces. efficiency. domestic spaces. how are you using your energy, is someone abusing your energy. productivity.
  • what one deems as productive. am I an independent agent.
  • power- who is in charge, weird kitch, installation, with the boss mugs, who is the boss. How is that person working with you, optimum level? who is in charge. a lot of questions but not answers.
  • simple act of putting gloss of the wall- show cracks and history of walls what institution has been hiding for years
  • institutional critique, why did she work with them. but not her role as an artist
  • bringing all of her influences together. discourse of moving images productivity, circulation, speaking about micro manoeuvres, less aggressive.
  • really happy with the show, when u have a commission, only know what it is like on the day of the show. there are enough people who understands what it is about. some really understood how charged this space is. few people missed its point.
  • subtleties in this show. people expecting loud, in your face, gestures. people lacking sensitivity. miss micro questions. doesn’t feel to justify or explain.
  • does require you to be in the space for some time.
  • titles, relationships. power relations. ‘Parents’ ‘children’ who is in charge of that, power relations
  • asking you to pay attention, having control in what you believe in. question of agency. believe in power structure,
  • the art world magnified everyone experiences on daily. easy to make these statements through art.
  • deciding where you want to be in the situation
  • basquiat, playing to that. pro what was happening in the art world, exploiting him and vice versa.
  • never a clear cut place to be, decision either. you as active agents / artists.
  • art world in crisis point right now? all of the old neo liberal structures are not supporting , takes more than artists wanting to make art these days. curators directors etc working with you , not just you. pressure to be producing . want to work in my own pace. now well being being affected. basquiat one of his key gallerist has been thrown in jail.
  • put pressure on art to push change ?
  • never fine landscapes before. continued . wanted them to be slightly over the top in terms of detail. bit too obsessed with detail. taking photographs and photoshop together to get single image and transferred on to panel and a lot invention .
  • work sent to Compton Verney , of the kids
  • how works divide up into different series
  • plan what you do before u leave the studio at night
  • Samuel palmer(?)
  • doing drWings to animate the practice a bit
  • outset studio makers scheme.
  • chisenhale is artist run space, some artists working here for 30 years, waiting list, interviews. how can u be useful to community.. open studios .. change in price.. £350 a month for studio, this is rare. probably one and only in London
  • acme , space studios. in London.
  • send works, prizes , start thinking about these things .
