trip: ken kiff exhibition in norwich

Today we went on the organized trip to Norwich (Sainsburys Centre) for the Ken Kiff exhibition. It was amazing, his acrylic paintings in The Sequence were really something to look at. I loved the way he titled his works so matter-of-factly, and how there are reoccurring symbols in the series such as the blue spike. I also loved how everything seems mundane but also surreal. Most of them are a good medium size, a little window into his mind. The blurbs in the exhibition were fascinating to read too. I feel that I had many similar ways in thinking and painting with Kiff. I’m definitely going to observe his works in more detail. I felt inspired to paint without tracing again.

Apart from the exhibition, we had some time leftover to explore the campus a little bit, and it was such a beautiful location, with the woods stretching out forever besides the dormitories. Olive and I had a lot of fun exploring the pretty buildings and walkways, as well as the different types of trees. We took a lot of photos, maybe some could serve as reference.

The journey to and back Norwich was around 2 and a half hours each on the coach and although we did sleep, I was also very in awe of the scenery in both journeys. The UK has a lot of sad but beautiful looking fields with strangely shaped trees everywhere. There were also some farm animals here and there (It was so weird because it looked like they weren’t moving and were merely models of animals). I definitely want to do some small studies of this.

Going on this little day trip made me realize why people like to travel. You discover new and wonderful places you never could have imagined and discover beauty in places you wouldn’t expect. It was overwhelming even though I was only a few hours away from where I usually am. I don’t think I am the type of person who can travel often, I’d get too overwhelmed. I am excited for the Marseille trip however, but I am also nervous because I am always stressed about travel.
