The group tutorial today was really useful. It was great to see how everyone is working through their interest/investigation. Molly went to an induction for screen printing (I am going to sign up too) and is also thinking about her identity. Caitlin was developing her ideas through extensive research and reading. Elena was trying out color palettes and compositions in her sketchbook. I’m not sure what I am doing.
I feel there was a lot of crossover with Elena and I: we were both looking at childhood memories, trying oil paint. Some interesting points came up as well: the idea that the digital space/ video game space can be a metaphor? for dreamscape or memory space. It is all very abstract but it makes sense. I definitely want to think about this idea next as well. I also want to try digital collage as a way of finding new strange compositions and also because I am interested in the aesthetics of solid graphics and digital colors even though I like fluid ink washes. The artist Merike Estna from the exhibition trip to Peckham was greatly inspiring, I loved the similar effects I saw in the works. I love their use of color as well, it seems quite ethereal and dream-like, at least from my point of view. I want to investigate the works more.
Afterwards, I went to the wood workshop since Tom suggested I could go with bigger panels, but let the figures stay the same size which was a simple but eye-opening suggestion because that would leave me with so much space to experiment with in the background. I’ve always struggled with scale as well so that would force me to think about my paintings with the background as well, as opposed to how I would usually do it, figure first. I collected a lot of small wood scraps and also they were kind enough to cut off a big piece of wood for me as well. Right now in the studio I have the urge to paint them block colors (maybe resin some, though I’d have to ask Tim where I could leave resin to dry) and set up different scenes with those scraps. I feel this might be able to give me space and freedom to play with composition in real space, even though I’m always thinking about the dreamscape. I also really want to try those pastel colors. Perhaps bold and bright as well. I am thinking of Paul Nash’s painting of those shapes in the field, it is one of my favorites of his, so surreal and strange, as with his other ‘object’ subjects.
references/rough notes:
Katie Moran (abstract/)
"Katy Moran’s paintings reflect a responsive working process: shifting or rotating the canvas while painting, reworking textures, and reconsidering the shapes and figures that emerge. With this approach to painting along with the inclusion of collage, often partially obscured, her work conveys a deliberate tension between materiality and subject. Moran creates a dynamic push and pull between the addition and the removal of paint; some works exhibit thick application of paint, while in others the painterly gesture is removed with rags dipped in varnish or even by sanding. Via the oscillation between representation and abstraction, composition and narrative, texture and space, Moran engages thought and sense simultaneously." cr. andrearosegallery
