first tutorial with Tom rough notes

talked about ideas of psychogeography,
  • I mentioned how buildings make me feel sad, not sure why,
  • tate 10th floor, see their houses, more like showrooms, (reflections)
  • how you treat a house is how you treat yourself
  • metaphor?
  • idea of home? where you’ve been?

ideas of identity? the past makes up who you are?
  • each culture experienced, unique to you but also experienced by others.
  • micro and macro scale
wanting to paint realistically
  • not a barrier in contemporary art world e.g. some artists get someone else to do it but,
  • he wanted to be a gestural painter but he just can’t,
  • think about what I want, and if thats what I want I can do it, it’ll just take a long time,
  • not so much falling back into comfort zone but building upon your practice,
  • if you always fall back to square one and try a new thing you’ll practice won’t come together,
  • have confidence that you’ll get there
  • seeing shows not so much about what you can do but how others do things (amy sillman abstract)

talk to tim about liking the fluidity of ink and watercolor and wanting to do that with oil (update: he said for oil its very difficult to mimic the fluidity of ink/watercolour. I also asked about chalk pastels on cotton linen since I tried it in the unit 5 task and I loved the freedom and how easy it glided on. Tim said I would have to also apply a fixative, but the best one he recommends is quite expensive / lascaux )
