I sat down to watch the film The Company Of Wolves - a suggestion from my tutor. I hesitated in watching it as I am not brave enough to watch horror usually, but I am so glad I watched this one. It literally felt like a nightmare - scenes washed into the next the girl dreams - as the granny told her horrific stories - but the central message behind the film seems to say ‘all wolves are men, all men are wolves,’ as this review stated. There is also a strong sense of female empowerment, she never once backed down from a man. I read somewhere that this film is ‘visually exciting’ and that is a huge understatement. I was struck with the most intense disgust and horror throughout the film. A film that can evoke such strong feelings like this must be a success. I liked it, I wasn’t comfortable watching it, (it was horrifying to go back and collect imagery), but I’m not supposed to. It was a great vintage film. Surreal scenes like the egg cracking open revealing a baby - and her teddy bear appearing oversized and attacking her - the sudden scene transition of the dead cows - this film is RICH with strange and wonderfully gory imagery that I would like to collage, perhaps. I liked the messages behind it as well, the quotes from it, the way they spoke in the 19th century. I have a fear of taxidermy/stuffed animals as well so, even though the wolf inside the man wasn't very realistic it was Extremely Horrifying. Also the fear of dolls coming to life has been greatly increased by those creepy dolls in her bedroom at the start. Anyway, here are some screenshots I reluctantly went back to gather:
(the wolf 'crying' was surprisingly heartwarming and made me feel sympathy for it)
