Returning to the animal concept, I started to sketch some foxes, particularly foxes with an animal in its mouth. I feel like there is something raw in the image of an animal hunting for/eating another. From discussions with my tutor and Nash's landscapes, I looked at images of places as well. I used images I took from a recent trip to the snowy switzerland. Apart from being inspired by its small village-like environment (arosa) much like where I was born (rotorua), I was also fascinated by its mountainous ranges. With the snow covering the tops, its mountains were like a distant cousin from the ones I've seen in new zealand. However, what really made this trip memorable was the rather frightening incident of a hotel catching fire, a fire that lasted a day or two, in a place where nothing happens. It was definitely scary looking in on this incident so clearly, feeling the smoke in the air, seeing the firefighters and helicopters flying in trying to stop its growth. Anyway, I also started to sketch scenes from here as well. In the end, I combined the fox and the scene together, and decided that I quite liked the combination.
I then primed a piece of wood and started to paint this combination. Then, after a visit to the print room I had a new idea of trying lino printing with the design I drew. This would be a new progress that I've never really tried much before. I had a flashback of a few years back, when I made a collage with animal images and made a lino print with it, which I quite liked. I hope experimentation with lino cutting would give new inspiration to my project.
