After visiting 4 exhibitions yesterday, (The approach gallery: Sophie Bueno-Boutellier, Hales gallery: Virginia Jaramillo, Parasol Unit: Tschabalala Self, Victoria Miro: Do Ho Suh) I’ve been very inspired by the contrast of how these artists approached a concept.

Tchabalala Self, for example, used more physical materials such as fabric and various collaging techniques to lay down a figure. I was very drawn to one particular piece, which involved multiple limbs on the figure. I felt an uneasiness similar to what I felt back in childhood, a very chaotic sense of movement. She may be conveying another idea completely but that was my initial reaction when I first looked at it. ****

I was also attracted to Sophie Bueno-Boutellier’s various paintings, which felt more like individual objects. Her work in the approach gallery was visually exciting as you could look at a piece from every angle and it would appear different, light would filter through one loop and colors would reflect back onto the white walls. There was an unspoken quietness of it all, something naiive yet very complex in structure.
